In Van Gogh's 'View of Arles', stippling is used in a more expressive manner to suggest the natural texture of a wheat field. With the exception of Pointillism, stippling is seldom used as a technique on its own. It is nearly always combined with cross-hatching in order to enhance its effect.

Georges-Pierre Seurat is another prominent artist who specialized in pointillism and stipple in the mid to late 1800’s. Such pieces as ‘Bathers at Asnieres’ and ‘Sunday Afternoon on the island of La Grande Jatte’, brought him into recognition.
